Barlow-McCarthy (1)

By: Allison McCarthy, MBA

It feels so good when I see clients have great results.  Becker’s Review recently highlighted Southcoast Health System’s recruitment results http://www.beckershospitalreview.com/hospital-physician-relationships/southcoast-health-system-is-on-provider-recruiting-spree.html.  You might say “well they’re in MA so how hard can it be”.  Despite all of the region’s training programs and world-renowned hospitals, this state is on the aggressive side of risk contracting, has the Attorney General and Justice Department constantly investigating pricing and trade restrictions and was the first state to pass health reform.  Not necessarily a physician practice panacea.

Southcoast recognized that success in this market meant having a sizable and well stratified physician network.  Barlow/McCarthy worked with their strategic planning team to create their medical staff development plan.  While the analysis was pretty straightforward, the challenge was defining recruitment priorities.  Pure community need identified several specialties as greatest need but the medical staff and organizational leadership thought a different specialty mix was key to enhancing clinical capabilities and reducing outmigration.

While the internal stakeholders wrestled with priorities, Barlow/McCarthy provided interim physician recruitment staff; engaging with a diverse leadership team to recruit into a dozen plus specialties.  Our directive was build recruitment momentum until the new physician recruitment leader was hired and in place.

What I now see is any consultant’s dream!  Recruitment priorities defined, leadership in place and solid results achieved.  Southcoast will tell you they don’t yet have it all figured out, but they have a strong foundation in which to continue to advance.
