The Holidays Might Look Different This Year, but Physician Recruitment Should Stay the Course

As we prepare for the Christmas holiday and the most recent COVID-19 surge continues, many of us are making the difficult decision to skip or dramatically curtail in-person holiday celebrations. On a professional front, many see it as an opportunity to slow down their recruitment efforts and take a break from “Zoom Doom.” The good news is there are ways to enjoy your holidays while keeping the recruitment pipeline full. Here are a few tips.

  • Just like we use this time to catch up on our personal emails, so do physicians. Spend some time thinking creatively about the subject lines for your email blasts. What words can you use to grab their attention? Make sure you’re visible when they’re scrolling through their messages.
  • December is when residents find out if they’ve been accepted into their fellowship program of choice. Follow-up with those residents that told you this was their plan and check if it got fulfilled. If it didn’t, they would need a plan B, and you might have that right opportunity for them.
  • The New Year can mean making a change. Check back with many of your most desired physicians with a messaging campaign targeting this possibility. Timing is everything in this case. You never know when your email will hit their in-box at the right time.
  • Take advantage of this time to create a specific holiday direct mail campaign – a “Closer to Home” message. With the pandemic’s impact, many physicians want to get closer to family and friends.

The holiday season may not seem like a great time for recruiting, but if you are strategically focused on using the right messages and tactics, you can make the most of the unique recruitment advantages that this time of year offers.
