The concept of mentor or career coach can mean different things to different people. Definitions can vary based on the job function, personal experience, and other factors, but it seems there are common themes regardless. I am fortunate to have had an amazing mentor, who has impacted my life. She and I often talked about writing a blog or doing a podcast together about what to look for in a mentor but unfortunately, we never got that chance. So, in honor of her recent birthday I thought I would pass along some of the ideas we shared about the value of a mentor.

To me, the definition of a mentor is “-an experienced and trusted adviser,” My mentor was definitely that. She was someone I could trust during times when I needed guidance. She was someone who I admired for her strength, intellect, and success. Her advice and feedback were rooted in honesty and experience, and that mattered.

Realizing that these characteristics were invaluable to me, helps me shape my ideas for you:

When searching for a mentor or those offering coaching support, look for an individual with the ability to communicate with influence and support you in any way to help you grow in your position and the organization. The ideal mentor should make you feel comfortable, no matter the off-the-wall question or the far-flung idea. Their role is to listen to your questions and ideas and provide outside perspective and sound advice to guide you to the next step. My mentor always invested the time in me and supported my professional development; she had a strong desire to help me succeed.

Perspective can make all the difference in making good decisions. Often where we sit is where we stand, and sometimes a slight difference in where we stand can dramatically change how we see things. My mentor taught me to “take a break,” and to “move around”. She encouraged me to view matters from different perspectives and gave me the tools to do that.

As I admire the gifts, she gave me, that proudly sit on my desk today, I’m reminded of the value of her lessons. During these pressing times in our industry, organizations stand a much better chances of advancing and achieving positive outcomes when they help build leaders at every level. Mentorship is an excellent way of enhancing those skills.
