Think back to the last time you met someone new. Maybe it was a neighbor, a new colleague, or even the person seated next to you on a plane. Chances are, within the first few minutes, you had already formed an impression—positive or not—that has shaped how you see them ever since.

It’s no different in physician relations. Those first moments with a physician can set the tone for the entire relationship. We’ve seen it time and again in our work with clients: when reps approach physicians with clarity, confidence, and genuine respect, the doors open wider for trust and future conversations. On the flip side, a shaky or unfocused introduction can take months to recover from.

So, how do you make that first impression count? Here are a few simple but powerful practices:

  • Do your homework. Physicians are busy and can spot a generic conversation a mile away. A little prep, knowing their background, clinical expertise, practice challenges, or even their schedule—goes a long way in showing respect for their time.
  • Lead with listening. Yes, you may have talking points, but the most impactful reps start by asking a thoughtful question and really listening to the answer. It communicates that the physician’s perspective matters more than your agenda.
  • Be present. In today’s world of constant multitasking, giving your full attention is a gift. Eye contact, engaged body language, and putting the phone away send a clear message: you matter to me right now.
  • Bring value right away. Share a quick insight, a helpful resource, or a relevant update that makes their day just a little easier. Value in the first five minutes creates a reason for the physician to welcome you back.
  • Follow through fast. If you promise to send information, make an introduction, or solve a problem—do it quickly. Nothing reinforces credibility like delivering on your word without delay.

Time and again, physicians remind us that it isn’t the data or the brochures that matter most, it’s how a rep makes them feel in that very first interaction. That’s the true art of a first impression: connection, professionalism, and relevance.

The next time you prepare for a physician visit, pause and ask yourself: What impression will I leave behind? If the answer is trust, value, and partnership, you’re already on the path to making every interaction count.
